Choosing a system

Solid color, flake or metallic?

Three finishes, three different jobs. The room usually decides it for you.

Solid color is the most economical finish and the least forgiving. It is a mirror: every trowel mark, every filled crack and every low spot in the slab shows through it in raking light. On a clean modern pour it looks sharp and costs the least of the three. On a repaired forty-year-old garage slab it will advertise every repair you just paid for. We will tell you honestly which of those your concrete is.

Flake sits in the middle on price and is the right answer for most floors we install. Vinyl chips broadcast into the base coat break the surface up visually, so slab imperfections and repairs disappear; the chip edges leave a fine texture that gives noticeably better grip when the floor is wet; and the blend is yours to choose. If your slab has been repaired at all, this is the finish to pick.

Metallic is the premium option and a genuine feature finish. Pigments move through clear resin as it levels, producing depth and veining that reads like polished stone, and no two floors are ever the same. It demands a flatter, sounder slab than flake does, it takes longer, it costs more, and it cannot be invisibly repaired. Put it where the floor is meant to be looked at — a showroom, a lobby, a finished basement, a feature garage — not where things get dropped on it.

There is a fourth option nobody sells you, and it is worth naming: sometimes the answer is not to coat it at all. A slab that is structurally failing, heaving, or breaking up across a large area is not a candidate for epoxy — a coating is only ever as sound as the concrete holding it, and putting a beautiful floor over a slab that is coming apart just means paying twice. If that is what we find, we will say so at the estimate rather than after.

On top of the finish sits the system build, which is a separate decision driven by use rather than looks. A residential garage and a warehouse running forklifts can carry the identical flake blend and still need completely different thicknesses, resin chemistries and topcoats underneath it. That part we spec for you after seeing the floor.
